Analysis of Demian by Hermann Hesse Demian is the story of a boy, Emil Sinclair, and his search for himself. Emil was raised in a good traditional home at the turn of the century in the nation of Germany. His family is very wealthy and they have a reputation as a principled, religious family. As a boy, Sinclair views the world within the walls of his home as representing all that is good, pure, and innocent. But starting at a young age, he feels an inner conflict between his own little world, the "world of light," and the outside world, or "forbidden realm" which represents sin and loneliness. Even though his mother, father, and two sisters remain within the "world of light", he constantly feels attracted to the outside realm. He ends up feeling uncertain between both of his little worlds, and not belonging to either one of them. This struggle between Sinclairââ¬â¢s two worlds is evident when Sinclair is about 10 years old. While playing one day with some fellow schoolmates, Franz Kromer, an older kid, joins them. In an effort to impress the older boy and his schoolmates, Sinclair makes up a story in which he and another unnamed accomplice stole a bag of apples from a fellow neighbor. Although the story is untrue, Kromer threatens Sinclair with exposure if Sinclair does not pay him off. Unable to pay the full amount, Sinclair is forced to become Kromerââ¬â¢s slave, ultimately sending Sinclair into depression and paranoia. Sinclair feels trapped by Kromer, forced to live within the "forbidden realm", which in turn exiles him from the "world of light" because he has defiled himself by lying and committing sinful acts for Kromer. This experience is traumatic for Sinclair and he is often haunted by nightmares, he is unable to eat, and he becomes withdrawn and sullen. His personality alters as he tries to cope with the bondage of his slavery to this lower-class, troublesome kid, but he sees no escape and reluctantly succumbs to what he believes to be his fate. The arrival of a new kid in tow n, Max Demian, is noticed by everyone due to the strange aura that surrounds him and his recently widowed mother. From the start, Sinclair feels a type of fascination for Demian, a confusing feeling filled with both love and hate. "He was in every respect different from all the others, was entirely himself, with a personality all his own which made him noticeable even though he did his best not to be noticed; his manner and bearing was that of a prince disguised among farm boys, taking great pains to appear one of them.

Do Large Lecture Halls Offer a Good Learning Environment Higher education comes in many forms, from small private colleges with one professor for every seven students, to enormous universities which utilize teaching assistants for almost all offered classes. The question I have as a student at Purdue, a university with around 35,000 students, is are large lecture halls with more than two hundred students effective places for learning to occur? When there are that many pupils in a classroom, it is nearly impossible for an instructor to take attendance. What is the motivation to attend class? Further, are students able to understand material presented in a classroom when there are hundreds more people in the classroom rustling papers, dropping pens, and whispering sarcastic comments about the lecture? In order to answer some of the above questions, I decided to study one of my largest lecture classes, Psychology 120 under Bob Melara. Class is held in an enormous lecture hall, which seats over five hundred students. In order to learn the answers, I did research for several weeks. I handed out questionnaires to other students at Purdue and observed Melaraââ¬â¢s class for about two weeks. In addition, I interviewed Saree Strom, a student in the honors section of Psychology 120. The class of Melaraââ¬â¢s that I studied meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 4:30 and 5:20 PM. Class is held in the giant lecture hall on the first floor of the Lily Hall of Sciences on State Street. There are about five hundred students in this section, and the seats are set up like a stadium so that each row is higher than the one below it. In addition to the regular class, the honors students meet Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:20. As honors students, their responsibilities increase to planning and leading small groups for each of the four labs that all students are required to do during the semester. There are twenty honors students in this section. The students in psychology discovered on the first day of class that the professor was a little out of the ordinary. He walked into class and announced, ââ¬Å"Hello, my name is Robert Melara, but I am not overly fond of that name. What you refer to me as when I am not around is unimportant, but please address me only as Bob.â⬠His hair is sort of long and shaggy, and it appears as though he never combs it.

Hope for Rehabilitation for Institutionalized Youth Offenders Essay
ââ¬Å"You do the crime, you pay the time,â⬠is a common phrase uttered throughout our society in regard to juvenile delinquency. It has been suggested that a punitive response to the problem of youth violence in America is an effective means of solving the issue of youth crime, and would also deter future offenders. As a result, the existence of rehabilitation strategies within the system available to offenders is under threat. A harsh and punitive response to youth violence was, in part, brought about by a moral panic across America. Exaggerations by the media and political figures act as instigators of panic. Both the media and politicians promoted the concept of the super-predator youth. The media played its part by publishing or airing many individual stories of violent youth. Those in question represented only a small amount of the adolescent population. However, many Americans took these media-conveyed stories at face value, and it seemed to the public that there could be a juvenile delinquent around every corner just slavering to steal their wallet or sell them narcotics (Howell, 27). As a political ploy, many of those running for office and looking to gain support drew on this fear and called for more punitive measures toward youth violence. Politicians pushed to confine youth within adult prisons (Howell, 27). In some states, those under the age of 16 can now be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and the ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in the United States reserved the right to execution of those under the age of 18. Eighteen youths have been put to death in the United States (Howell, 39). They may not be able to physically give back what they have taken, be it life, possessions, or the integrity of others or themselves. Giving comes in many shapes and sizes. A rehabilitated young man may become a mentor for at-risk kids. A young woman out of treatment may start midnight basketball in her crime-ridden neighborhood. Another may move on to further his education. The possibilities are endless for so many of these youths. However, they need help in accomplishing their potential. This being said, who are we to deprive someone so young with so many years ahead of them, of life and liberty? These young people deserve a chance. They can change for the better. This can be accomplished by further investigating effective treatment. Now is the time to make it happen.

Aspects of Human Resource Management The main focus of Human Resource Management is personnel and how they can be best utilized to accomplish the mission of the organization based on several aspects of the department. These aspects are Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, Human Resource Planning, Execution and Selection, Human Resources Development, Compensation and Benefits, Safety and Health, and Employee and Labor Relations. Each area serves a dual purpose of helping the employer provide a better environment to their employees and ensure the success of the company.This paper will reflect on each aspect of human resource management and discuss how they work together to perform the primary function. Almost all aspects of human resource management are affected by Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action laws. These laws govern the human resource process of recruiting, selecting and promoting the best and most qualified person for the job. It protects employees or pote ntial recruits from discrimination based on race, color, gender, age, religion or national origin (as cited by Youssef, 2012. Sec 1. 5).One example of discrimination in the workplace would be an employer asking applicants to list their background/ethnicity on an employment application with the intent to use that information for hiring purposes. This type of business practice is illegal and can have damaging consequences such as a class action lawsuit or a negative image on the organization. Decisions concerning all aspects of human resource management should be based off the best interest of the company. The more diverse a company is the more effective it can operate because it brings new ideas and different perspectives to the table.Another important aspect of human resource management is planning. Planning is the process of setting a goal or task, and determining step by step how an organization will achieve those goals. In order for an organization to achieve its strategic object ives it requires a lot of planning. This major task is one of many functions performed by the human resources department. human resource planning is responsible for managing all matters relating to employees. They must accurately predict the number of employees the rganization will need in order to achieve the organizationââ¬â¢s strategic goals. Having too many or too little employees can hinder the organizations ability to operate efficiently, effectively and competitively. Once it is determined how many employees are needed, human resource staff must select qualified applicants to fulfill desired positions based on an employeeââ¬â¢s knowledge, skill and abilities. Also, they must plan how to best utilize the workforceââ¬â¢s skills and talents in order to obtain a competitive advantage over their counterparts.Furthermore in relating to human resource planning, part of achieving an organizationââ¬â¢s goal is it must have the right amount of people to do the job and a pla n on how to retain them once the selection process has occurred. For example, in order for the military to achieve its strategic objectives, it must have the right number of soldiers to fulfill certain jobs or tasks. Like any other organization, in order to be considered for a position in the military, you must take an aptitude test to determine what jobs in the military would best suit your abilities.Based off how you score will determine what jobs you qualify for. This score is known as the Armed Forces Qualification Test Score and is important because it determines whether you can join the military service of your choice. Each branch of service has set their own minimum AFQT score. Another part of strategic planning in the military is retaining soldiers and in order to retain qualified soldiers they offer incentives such as sign-on bonuses, reenlist bonuses, assignment preferencesâ⬠¦ etcHuman Development is another aspect that is essential to the management, training, and imp rovement of employees. At different stages of their careers, employees need different kinds of training. Human Resources Managementââ¬â¢s role is to provide this training to employees to sharpen their skills and the organizationââ¬â¢s capability. When the organization invests in improving the knowledge and skills of their employees, the investment is returned in the form of productivity and effective employees. As time passes and technology changes the role of training and development programs will be transformed.As employees, we need to be flexible and partake in continuous learning. Also, updating your skill set will be critical to your personal and professional success. In order to measure the effectiveness of training, there are several steps you can take to ensure it works. The first step would be to ask for feedback from the employees once training has been conducted. If the training does not pertain to the actual job or is lacking pertinent information the employeesâ⠬⢠feedback can help improve the training.The next measure to take to test the effectiveness of training is to administer a pre-test and post-test and compare the results. Working with vulnerable populations can be very stressful
I find that keeping with a predictable routine has a calming effect on my daily life.à It also creates a sense of security and reliability within my relationships with co-workers and clients.This is important as interpersonal relationships should not become an additional source of stress, but instead an integral part of team-building within an organisation.à I would both be a mentor and find a mentor and with reciprocal understanding and direction toward a common goal of doing what is best for the common good, my co-workers and I would help each other work through our similar stresses.I would also be kind but firm with clients and help in any way that is required without taking any clients success or relapse as a personal failure or conversely a thing that I created rather than initiated.à I think it is very stressful to believe that one has total power to change others, as this creates a sense of being that is unrealistic.I will help when I can and do my best to help others in achieving their goals and not take my experiences at work with me when I exit the door to go home.à I will use my personal time to refresh for the next work day.2.à What specific approaches would you take with your clients?I believe that this depends on the individual clientââ¬â¢s goals and particular stage of functioning.à Sometimes, it is necessary to undertake crisis stabilization and make sure that a client is not going to harm him or herself.à This is the primary focus and sometimes demands one to restrain and assist a doctor in medication regulation to get the client to a point to initiate the next step in treatment.Identification of issues and maintenance of levels of functioning and increasing self-efficacy in a clients behavior is necessary in a secondary stage approach to client management.Management on a tertiary stage would include helping with individual growth and development to assist each person to becoming as healthy as possible and at the highest level of functioning possible.à At this point, goal-setting and group therapy would be a good approach.3.à Do you believe that there are any clients that you would not be able to effectively care for?No, I am a firm believer of Carl Rogers person-centered therapy and the need to assist others with unconditional positive regard.à As a Humanist, I believe that each person should help others achieve what goals they set for themselves and to resist personal judgment on each individuals sense of person, reality, and future.à Since I waive all judgment as a person of this school of thought, I do not foresee having any person that I cannot properly deal with.If for some strange, idiosyncratic reason, I find myself unable to assist a client properly, I would ethically and without sense of failure ask a colleague for assistance.à I do know my limitations and think that only case overload would ever be an issue.à I need to have enough time to devote to each of my clients an d would clearly address any issues with overload or any other issue promptly and professionally.Ã
